Which download format should I use — DXF, PDF or SVG?

Every Die Cut Templates dieline can be downloaded in a few file formats. They all contain the same dieline — the difference is what you'll open it in and what you do next. Here's how to pick.

DXF — for Illustrator and production

DXF is the default. It's a vector CAD format that opens cleanly in Adobe Illustrator and is the format most print and die-cutting suppliers expect. You can download it in millimetres or inches — see Import a DXF dieline into Illustrator for the import settings. (With the plug-in, the dieline comes in at true size automatically.)

PDF — for sharing and printing

PDF is the universal choice for sending a dieline to a colleague or a printer. It opens anywhere, keeps the exact dimensions, and is ready to print or mark up.

SVG — for the web and vector tools

SVG is a web-friendly vector format that opens in most design applications. It's handy when you want to place the dieline on a web page or work in a tool that prefers SVG.

Which should I pick?

• Designing in Illustrator or sending to production → DXF (or use the plug-in).
• Sharing or printing a proof → PDF.
• Web or another vector tool → SVG.
